Its own city 20 miles south of Sarasota, laid out in the 1920s on a Northern Italian plan — hence the low stucco storefronts, wide medians and street grid that actually makes sense on foot. The island section holds 1950s and '60s block homes minutes from Venice and Caspersen beaches, where shark-tooth hunting is a genuine local pastime. East of the Trail, Wellen Park and the newer subdivisions off Center Road are still absorbing thousands of new houses, which keeps entry pricing here well under the barrier islands.
